Hello Flore de Durfort, CEO & Co-founder of Atmen, a Software platform for certifying green production. Can you tell us what you did before entering the hydrogen world?

I’ve always been passionate about energy transition. I studied energy markets and worked for 10 years in major electricity and gas companies across Europe and the U.S. In 2017, I shifted towards tech and data, managing data monetization for E.ON before founding Atmen.

How did you get into hydrogen?

I worked at the intersection of gas, electricity, and carbon markets for 10 years, which naturally led me to hydrogen. I believe hydrogen is key for decarbonizing industry reconquering energy sovereignty, alongside renewable energy and carbon capture. Atmen focuses on automating the certification of low-carbon products, starting with hydrogen.

What would happen if we kept the current certification system?

  1. Major risks of errors and frauds – on top of high operational costs. For a standard 10 MW renewable hydrogen site, 70,000 data points and documents need to be processed yearly. Making and verifying sustainability claims in this context can only be done at scale with a technology-enabled approach which is infused by regulatory knowledge.
  2. Lack of transparency leading to a trust deficit – which can break a nascent market. Atmen offers full-traceability solutions, for example with digital passports issued per batch of product, sharing the story of its full lifecycle with consumers.

What do you battle against daily?

Jargon! Regulation is complex. Operationalizing it is not straightforward either. Acronym salads really don’t help – they create unnecessary barriers and exclude newcomers from contributing. I fight daily to replace unnecessary jargon by simple language.
