  • BMW Group has awarded Lhyfe a multi-year contract to supply its Steyr site in Austria with green hydrogen.
  • The Steyr site is responsible for the series development and subsequent industrialisation of the manufacturer’s hydrogen fuel cell system.
  • Lhyfe will make its first deliveries in Austria, using its hydrogen transport fleet – one of the most comprehensive in Europe.

Nantes (France), on 30 April 2026 – Lhyfe (EURONEXT: LHYFE) – one of the world’s pioneers in the production of green and renewable hydrogen for the decarbonisation of industry and mobility –announced a cooperation with BMW Group to supply green hydrogen to the Steyr site in Austria.

Supplying a strategic site for BMW Group’s hydrogen technology

The BMW Group site in Steyr, Austria, is getting ready to mass produce fuel cell systems for the new BMW X5 model. BMW Group’s third-generation hydrogen propulsion system will be produced there from 2028. Previous development stages and prototype generations of the third-generation hydrogen system were developed in Munich. This advance technology paves the way for a more compact, more powerful and more efficient system, increasing range and power while reducing the vehicle’s energy consumption.

The green hydrogen supplied by Lhyfe will be used for series development, industrialisation, testing and validation activities at the Steyr site.

At a time when low-carbon mobility solutions are diversifying, hydrogen has confirmed its relevance as a complement to electric batteries, particularly for intensive use, for vehicles that demand long range and fast recharging times (SUVs, taxis, vans, forklift trucks, lorries, etc.), or in geographical areas where the electricity grid cannot support mass electrification of the vehicle fleet. The development of these technologies by major industrial players such as BMW Group is a sign that this sector is gradually structuring in Europe.

Lhyfe: recognised industrial and logistics expertise

BMW Group chose Lhyfe as its supplier based on its combined experience in the production and logistics of renewable hydrogen.

As a producer and supplier of green hydrogen in Europe since 2021, Lhyfe has one of the largest bulk hydrogen transportation fleets in the European Union. In 2025, the company made more than 850 deliveries throughout Europe. It has installed four production sites in France and Germany – with a total production capacity of up to 8.5 tonnes of green hydrogen per day – and plans to commission two additional sites in France by the end of the year.

All operating sites are RFNBO-certified, guaranteeing that their hydrogen complies with European requirements for renewable energy.

Thanks to its infrastructure, logistical strength and partnerships, Lhyfe is able to deliver green and RFNBO hydrogen throughout Europe.

Its deliveries to BMW Group will be its first in Austria.

Matthieu Guesné, founder and CEO of Lhyfe: “BMW Group is one of the world’s leading mobility companies, whom we commend for its concrete commitment to the energy transition in a sector set to undergo profound transformation. For Lhyfe, being chosen to support the industrial development of its fuel cell technology is strong recognition not only of our expertise, but also of our ability to guarantee a reliable supply that meets the standards of major manufacturers.”

About Lhyfe

Lhyfe is a European group devoted to energy transition, and a producer and supplier of green and renewable hydrogen. Through its production sites and portfolio of projects, it seeks to provide access to green and renewable hydrogen in industrial quantities, fostering a virtuous energy model that both decarbonises entire sectors of industry and transport and enhances regional energy sovereignty.

In 2021, Lhyfe inaugurated the first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant in the world to be interconnected with a wind farm. In 2022, it inaugurated the first offshore green hydrogen production pilot platform in the world. Since then, Lhyfe has installed four other production sites and has several sites under construction or extension across Europe. In September 2025, Lhyfe became Europe’s largest producer of bulk RFNBO hydrogen from the electrolysis of water.
